Quake 3 hits the iPod touch, makes for portable LAN party

Future generations will most likely divide the timeline of history at this point: when Quake 3 achieved motion-sensing, wireless network play on two iPod touches. Just think, less than a year ago we were salivating (or at least mildly enthused) at the prospect of rocking Doom on this thing, and now Quake 3 Arena is yours for the taking -- or at least will be once we get any sort of hard info on this app.

i-mate's US outpost implodes, most laid off

We've caught wind from a number of employees -- or ex-employees, as the case may be -- that i-mate's US division in Redmond, Washington has all but disintegrated after a Friday bloodbath that saw the entire engineering, QA, and tech writing departments laid off, among others. Several honchos who weren't cut left anyway, perhaps unwilling to work in a ghost town or as a show of solidarity to their fallen brethren; notably, the Chief Software Officer and VP of Sales and Marketing are both gone, leaving a sales director to be promoted to the lofty title of GM of what seems to be all US operations. Apparently, the Dubai-based firm is in the hurt locker after its inability to get the Ultimate line (also known as "the basket with all of i-mate's eggs in it") fully deployed to retail channels in the time frame it had hoped, and meeting massive resistance from US carriers to carry the devices, it's been left with no option but to leave behind just enough employees to set up and maintain a web-based portal for purchasing unlocked devices in the States. To those who've been handed your walking papers, we wish you the best of luck.

Transcend JetFlash V60 bulges to 32GB

The JetFlash V60 supports Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP/Vista, Mac and Linux.

The JetFlash 32GB V60 is available now for an untaxed recommended list price of US$194.

IBM's "green optical link" promises one second movie downloads

So IBM is apparently working like crazy on some next-gen communications technology that -- ready to have your mind blown? -- "uses light instead of wires to send information." We know, this is some crazy future crap up in here, but check it out. Apparently this so-called light-based communications system is supposed to be ten times more power efficient than others in its class, and can transfer data at speeds far greater than our current 4Mbps token-ring networks and even the next-gen 10BASE2 Ethernet (as if!); if optical data communications are actually real, well, it's just in time because we've been seriously maxing out our Tandy 1000 playing MUDs. Touting such other gibberish as "high definition content," and "ex-aflop supercomputing," IBM's Optocards (which feature integrated "Optochips") can apparently move data at up to 8Tbps / 1TBps per second, which isn't quite up to snuff to compete with Alcatel-Lucent's latest, but is still, like, way more than necessary for accessing the Engadget BBS.

SanDisk introduces FlashBack adapter as notebook HDD backup

SanDisk announced the availability of its FlashBack adapter as a backup storage media to protect against unexpected PC system failure or hard disk drive (HDD) crash.
The FlashBack adapter fits into the ExpressCard slot where it will automatically and continuously back up and encrypt critical data onto a SecureDigital (SD) or SD HighCapacity (SDHC) card. With the backup card nested completely inside the notebook, the system is literally out of sight.
Once the adapter is installed, users pre-select backup sources by individual files, folders and/or file types. The device will then back up and encrypt data automatically and continuously from the computer's HDD to the memory card. Backup occurs as soon as there is a change to a designated file, or when a file is added or deleted. There is no need for scheduling backups and no need for further user intervention. Also, the application has a screen indicator to show the amount of storage available, along with a taskbar icon that displays the ongoing backup status.
SanDisk highlighted the easy data restoration process. Once the application is open, users only have to log in to access, select the encrypted files on the memory card and indicate the restore destination. Users can also restore data from the memory card on any PC that uses Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista and has an SD memory card reader.
For protection against laptop theft and to easily share backed-up files, the SanDisk FlashBack adapter also offers users an option for backing up content online at BelnSync.
The SanDisk FlashBack adapter is being demonstrated this week at the CeBIT electronics trade show in Hannover, Germany.
SanDisk will start shipping the adapter

PacketVideo brings Mobile TV to any WiFi device

PacketVideo has a new receiver which can pump mobile TV over good ol' WiFi. PV claims the device will ultimately ship before the year is out in versions supporting over-the-air DVB-H and MediaFLO broadcasting as well as TDtv and WiMAX streaming. Although it's presumably compatible with any WiFi device, they specifically cite support for the the iPhone, N-Series Nokias and HTC devices while demonstrating the device with an iPod touch at Mobile World Congress. The 6.4 x 1.8 x 4-cm block is powered by a lithium-ion battery of unspecified capabilities. Although it's not stated, we assume the received television can be shared with multiple devices over that wireless link -- else why bother with WiFi?

    Delete unused hidden system softwares

XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything.

Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file located at X:/windows/inf/sysoc.inf (where x is the drive of xp located), search for the word 'hide' and remove every occurance of it.

Now go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and hidden system softwares will be displayed . They will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable..

Open any file with Notepad,Wordpad or any other Text Editor

When you want to open a file in notepad and find there is no direct solution, and going through the whole procedure of opening up notepad first, then selectively opening the file from there takes some serious time if you do it frequently. What if you could open any file with notepad, wordpad or just about any other text editor just by right clicking on it? Yes, you can.

To open any file from Notepad, do this:

    • Start Run. (Start->Run)
    • Type "sendto".
    • The sendto folder will be opened.
    • Now create a shortcut of the text editor you want to use.
    • For example, to use notepad, simply create a shortcut of notepad in this folder.

Now, you can right click on any file, go to the send to menu, and send the file to notepad to have it opened in notepad. And it works for any kind of file which you have on your system.

Besides notepad, you can also create shortcuts of any other text editor such as Wordpad, Metapad, etc. and have the file opened in them. Just make a new shortcut of them in the sendto folder.

Note: This tweak works in a per user basis in Windows, which means if this is done by user A on a system, it will not work for user B on the same system.

GeForce 8 GPUs to acquire PhysX support via software download

Good news for folks with a GeForce 8 GPU and lots of questions about how the recent Ageia acquisition would affect them: your current card will be receiving PhysX support. When NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was questioned in a recent conference call, he noted that the firm was currently "working towards the physics-engine-to-CUDA port," and it could be delivered as "a software update" to every card that's CUDA-enabled (read: all of the GeForce 8 GPUs). Sadly, the bigwig still wouldn't say when to expect the release of the first PhysX port, but we really can't imagine it taking too awfully long now.

Onkyo unveils another audiophile PC, the APX-2 HD

Onyko's cranked out a couple slick little audio-oriented desktops and media PCs, and its latest carries the tradition on in fine form -- the new APX-2 HD audiophile PC actually looks more like a high-end shelf system than a PC, if you ask us. The compact unit houses a 1.66GHz T5500 Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, a vibration-isolated 500GB disk and the same digital amplifier found in the PCI-200 sound card, which bypasses Vista's sound mixer and channels audio directly through to avoid HD Audio signal loss. Sadly, this one looks to be Japan-only, but if you're headed out that way, you'll want an extra couple grand in your pocket to snag one of these bad boys.

PS3 puts on a silver satin dress in Japan

Mmm, the Satin Silver PS3. Scheduled for a ¥39,980 (about $374) March 6th release in Japan with matching ¥5,500 (about $51) DualShock 3 controller. The disk capacity you ask? 40GB, that's your only option in Japan albeit in your choice of three colors.

    Inventec's UMPC 7-A and 5-D get pictured

Our eyes may still be slightly out of focus from the complete lack of sleep obtained while at CES, but the two Inventec UMPCs purportedly going by 7-A / 5-D sure look a heck of a lot different than the model we peeked in Vegas. As you can glean from the image above, the UMPC 7-A sports a nifty slider design that supposedly places the QWERTY keyboard at a "more natural angle" for the user. As for the so-called UMPC 5-D (shown after the jump), it ditches the aforementioned design and takes a more modular approach to satisfy those who just adore buying a new dock for every handheld they own. Regrettably, we've no hard details surrounding the specs of these two machines, but we doubt we'll have to twiddle our thumbs for too much longer before finding out.

Amazon MP3 store to spread DRM-free love global in 2008

    digg_url='http://digg.com/music/Amazon_MP3_store_spreading_DRM_free_love_global_in_2008';
In perhaps the biggest threat to Apple's global dominance of digital music, Amazon just announced the international rollout of Amazon MP3. Right, the on-line storefront offering DRM-free music from all four major labels. That's 3.3 million songs (priced at $0.99 or less) from over 270k artists encoded in 256kbps MP3 files for playback on any PC, any Mac, and pretty much any portable device you might own. Sure, it's beta but so is that gMail account you've been using for the past 4 years. Unfortunately, the best that Amazon can commit to is "this year" which leaves plenty of time for the house of Apple to get their DRM shiznit together.

TI DLP pico-projector technology in a mobile phone

A second-generation DLP pico-projector prototype from Texas Instruments (TI) is thinner and smaller, which allows easier integration in many mobile devices such as cellular phones, digital cameras and portable media players, according to the company. The latest prototype is in the form factor of a slim cell phone, measuring in at around 10mm in thickness, with no fan or other moving parts, said TI.

Teclast's M30 PMP is mildly attractive, mostly lackluster

Truth be told, Teclast's M30 seems be to a real looker at first, but we're knocking off a few style points due the complete absence of originality. All it takes is a simple glance at the unit's predecessors to realize that the outfit isn't exactly going out on any limbs to innovate. Nevertheless, those still interested can look forward to a 2.8-inch 320 x 240 AMOLED display, USB 2.0 connectivity, FM tuner / recorder and support for AVI, RM, RMVB, BMP, MP3, JPEG and GIF file formats. Thankfully, the mediocrity is met with a suitable price tag -- just $69 for the 2GB model and $82 for the 4GB edition.

Garmin's pricey nuvi 850 shows up fashionably late

Quite frankly, we were a touch overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of new nüvis announced for CES, but apparently, Garmin has managed to recuperate from its own outpouring and is dishing out yet another newcomer. On the docket today is the nüvi 850, a Bluetooth-less navigator that attempts to compensate for its lack of handsfree support by featuring a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 resolution touchscreen, a rechargeable Li-ion good for around four hours, a microSD slot, speech recognition, a 3D map view, support for MSN Direct and a built-in media player. Additionally, you'll find an FM transmitter, audio out and an internal (read: non flip-up) antenna to ratchet the style factor up a notch. According to Garmin, this fairly potent device will be up for grabs in Q2 for upwards of $800.

Hacker goes bananas, creates robotic Chumby driving machine

How well we know how distorted the world becomes when you're only alive courtesy of (insert energy drink here). Thankfully, we've no idea how twisted your mind must be to create a conglomerate with so much going on, it's truly hard to describe in merely a single breath. Nevertheless, bunnie somehow managed to scrounge up enough hardware to hack together a Chumby-based, drivable RC car with the ability to beam back its surroundings so that it could be controlled from afar. Of course, we can't help but pass along kudos for making this thing work, but seriously, it's high, high up on the list of most unsightly concoctions we've ever seen. Hit up the read link for ugly (and duct tape) aplenty.

    Folder Option Disappeared

Guys when your computer infected with viruses THE most common effect is "folder option is missing"
if that so then try this out

Open Run and then type "gpedit.msc".
Now goto User Configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Component > Windows Explorer.
Click on Windows Explorer you will find the 3rd option on the right side of screen "Removes the Folder Option menu item from the Tools menu" Just check it, if it is not configured then change it to enable by double clicking on it and after applying again set it to not configured. I hopes that you will find the option after restarting windows........!!

Dell's 24-inch 2408WFP monitor with DisplayPort (and everything else) now available

It's here. Dell's 24-inch, Ultrasharp 2408WFP monitor is up and dancing on Dell's US page. $748 buys into a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution, 178-degree viewing angle, 1,300:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness, 6-ms response, and 102% color gamut. Standard stuff until you get to the vast suite of jacks: HDMI, 2x DVI, DisplayPort, VGA, Composite, S-Video, Component, a single USB upstream, and 2x USB downstream. Just another reason why Round Rock, Tejas is the world's focal point for computer monitors. Who'd have thunk?

Leaked Dell laptop brings the sexy

We've had many a leaked Dell fall into our laps over the years, but this one is already shaping up to be our fave. We don't have a name, date, or price on it yet, but we can tell you this number is aiming to be 20mm (0.78-inches) thick, with an aluminum extrusion and carbon-fiber chassis -- exotic materials rarely found in Round Rock machines. It'll also have an LED backlit display, but all of the above is still pretty early so there may be changes made before it goes into production -- which, by our standards, can't be soon enough.

    BenQ's emaciated 8 megapixel DSC X800: just barely three-dimensional

It may not be the biggest name in consumer electronics, but when it comes to stuffing megapixels into ridiculously-skinny packages, there aren't many out there who do it better than BenQ. Case in point is the new eight megapixel DSC X800, which, at just 9.8 millimeters at its thinnest point (14mm at its fattest), is not only slimmer than the recently-announced DC X835, it even gives the company's trimmest seven megapixel shooter, the 12.5-millimeter DC X725, a run for its money. Besides its pocketability, however, this model doesn't offer much in the way of high-end features: 3x optical zoom, 3-inch LCD, digital image stabilization, VGA movie mode, and a rather non-standard microSD slot are par for the course here. Keep reading after the break for another angle / color combo of the as-yet-unpriced shooter, which should be shipping sometime this quarter.

    iPhone invading Canada tomorrow?

According to a report from the market-mindful Bloomberg, old Jobsy could be dropping the iPhone on Canada come tomorrow's keynote. If you believe what RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky says (and that's a big if), Apple will unleash the phone via Rogers Communications -- the country's largest mobile service provider. "There's a very good chance that Apple will announce or discuss some kind of other carrier roll-outs, beyond the ones it has done in Europe and the U.S." He said, adding that, "There is definitely very strong demand and interest here." To which we say, "Duh," and, "Hey, we've heard this before." Though we're not sure Steve will have time for the Canadian launch in his keynote, what with all the algae-based hard drives, unicorn laptops, and rays of pure energy he'll be introducing.

Intempo reveals kinda sexy Daisy portable internet radio

Last we heard from Intempo, it was busy grasping for business with a slew of ho hum iPod docks, but it's getting '08 started by offering up a slightly (keyword: slightly) more attractive item. The Daisy internet radio can access "thousands" of online and FM stations, and it can reportedly last for around 20 hours before needing a recharge. You'll also find a pretty basic LCD, but outside of that, we wouldn't expect a whole heap of extras. The Daisy is slated to hit production by next April and will land on store shelves with an admittedly steep £149 ($292) price tag shortly thereafter.

Pleo dissected -- oh, the humanity!

We guess it was only matter a time until it happened. Still, we can't help but feel a bit sad and creeped-out at seeing Pleo splayed in a Santilli-esque display of sideshow curio. Inside, the evil doctors over at ifixit reveal a single-piece, rubbery skin covering 14 motors, more than 100 gears, 15 circuit boards, 1 color camera, 2x microphones, 1 IR transmitter, 1 accelerometer, and 8 touch capacitance sensors. Plenty of high-res shots just beyond the read link. Man, aren't there laws against this kind of thing?

Mercedes S400 BlueHybrid aims to be first to use Li-ion battery

There's a decent chance your average hybrid owner wouldn't know the difference between a lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride battery if their life depended on it, but we know you -- dear reader -- are not one of those "average" joes / janes. That being the case, you may be interested to know that the 2009-bound S400 BlueHybrid is in prime position to be the world's first production Li-ion hybrid, which will offer up "compact dimensions and far superior performance" compared to existing rivals. M-B goes on to trumpet the technology's "high ampere-hour efficiency, long service life, and great reliability, even at very low temperatures." No word on just how astronomically high this thing will be priced at, but you can expect just shy of 30 miles-per-gallon in mixed driving conditions, for what it's worth.
